How to become a successful trader: Step-by-Step Guide to the Disciplines of Intraday Trading

Learn risk management, technical execution, and trader discipline step-by-step.

2How to Safely Select Stocks for Intraday Trading: A Systematic Screening Framework (Current)

In Part 1: The Disciplines of an Intraday Trader, we established the foundational risk boundaries and execution mindsets necessary to survive in the market. However, even the most disciplined execution will fail if applied to the wrong assets.

A frequent pitfall for beginner day traders is scanning 2,000+ listed equities in real time and reacting impulsively to random percentage-gainer lists. Random selection leads to poor fills, high slippage, sudden liquidity dry-ups, and erratic price swings that invalidate technical levels.

Professional day trading begins well before the opening bell. This guide breaks down an institutional-grade, rule-based screening framework to filter the entire market into a high-conviction intraday watchlist of 3 to 5 stocks each morning.

Pillar 1: The Non-Negotiable Liquidity & Volatility Filters

Not every volatile stock is suitable for day trading. Penny stocks, upper-circuit tickers, and thinly traded small caps present asymmetric downside risk due to wide bid-ask spreads and sudden freeze locks.

Before evaluating any chart pattern, your universe must pass two quantitative gating criteria:

  • High Daily Volume & Institutional Float: Focus exclusively on large-cap and highly liquid mid-cap universes, such as the Nifty 100 or active F&O (Futures & Options) underlying stocks. Ensure the stock averages a daily trading volume of at least 1,000,000 shares (or turnover exceeding ₹50 crore).
  • Adequate Average True Range (ATR): A stock with low volatility will not move enough during trading hours to cover transaction costs, STT, and slippage while providing a 1:2 Risk-to-Reward ratio. Look for stocks with a 14-period daily ATR percentage of at least 1.5% to 2.5% of the stock price.
  • Pillar 2: The 3-Step Pre-Market Screening Routine (8:30 AM – 9:00 AM IST)

Consistent intraday traders do not chase stocks at random after the 9:15 AM open. The groundwork is laid during the pre-market window:

  • Step 1: Global Cues & Sector Heatmap (8:30 AM): Check index futures (GIFT Nifty), key Asian benchmarks, and overnight US index closes to gauge broader market sentiment (Bullish, Bearish, or Neutral).
  • Step 2: Pre-Open Order Flow & Gap Analysis (9:00 AM – 9:08 AM): Analyze the NSE pre-market open session. Look for stocks gapping up or down between 0.75% and 2.5% on significant opening volume. Avoid stocks gapping over 4% to 5%, as the bulk of the intraday momentum has likely already played out.
  • Step 3: Filter by Catalysts: Identify why the stock is in play. Earnings announcements, regulatory approvals, institutional block deals, or strong sectoral tailwinds provide the sustained institutional order flow needed for clean intraday trends.
  • Measure how trade expectancy, risk management, and capital compounding grow your account over time.

Pillar 3: Filtering for Relative Strength & Relative Weakness (RS/RW)

Trading stocks that move independently of the broader market index (Nifty 50) provides the highest statistical edge for intraday setups.

  • Relative Strength (RS): If the Nifty 50 is pulling back or consolidating, but a specific stock is making higher swing highs and holding above its intraday Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP), institutional buyers are actively accumulating. This is your prime long candidate.
  • Relative Weakness (RW): If the benchmark index is staging a strong morning rally, but a stock is failing to bounce and continues testing its day's lows with heavy selling volume, aggressive distribution is underway. This is your prime short candidate.
  • Aligning with RS/RW prevents sudden stop-outs caused by minor intraday counter-trend fluctuations in the benchmark index.

Pillar 4: Defining Intraday Entry Setups on the Watchlist

Once your watchlist is narrowed down to 3 to 5 liquid candidates, monitor them on 5-minute and 15-minute timeframes for structural triggers:

  • Opening Range Breakout (ORB): Mark the high and low of the first 15 minutes (9:15 AM – 9:30 AM). Look for a clean breakout accompanied by volume expansion and candle closes outside the range.
  • VWAP Pullback / Reclaim: In an established morning trend, wait for the price to pull back to the VWAP line and print a reversal candle (e.g., hammer or bullish engulfing) before entering.
  • Key Multi-Day Support/Resistance Breaches: Prioritize stocks that are breaking out of 5-day or 20-day daily consolidation zones on the intraday chart.
  • Red Flags: When to Discard a Stock from Your List

  • Circuit Breaker Risk: Avoid non-F&O stocks that are within 1% to 2% of their upper or lower price bands (circuit limits). Getting trapped in a lower circuit makes stop-loss execution impossible.
  • Erratic Wicks & Choppy Spreads: If a 5-minute candle chart shows continuous long upper and lower shadows (wicks) with low bar-by-bar volume, the stock is experiencing liquidity fragmentation. Remove it immediately.
  • Binary News Uncertainty: Avoid taking intraday directional bets right before high-impact binary events (e.g., RBI Monetary Policy announcements or mid-session union budget speeches) where implied volatility collapse can cause severe slippage.
  • By standardizing your daily stock selection into a structured, repeatable checklist, you remove subjective bias and position yourself alongside institutional liquidity.
